Bonika Wilson recognized as Top 40 under 40

Bonika Wilson is recognized as 2013 Top 40 under 40

Bonika Wilson has been instrumental for year-over-year revenue and profit growth in the WCM Firm, where she is CEO and managing consultant. Despite the nation’s economic challenges, Wilson, 37, grew rather than lost jobs at the 14-employee firm, which also now operates three offices out of seven states.

Education: M.A., organizational behavior and HRD, George Washington University, and B.A., sociology, Virginia State University

City: Birmingham

Family: Husband, Dontá, and sons: Jalen, 13, and Dylan, 5

Who is your historical hero? Bessie Coleman

Why did you choose your historical hero? Bessie Coleman’s determination and resiliency led her to defy odds, be an example for others and soar. As a result, I believe many women see our difference as strength, and we have learned to leverage those strengths in the boardroom and in our organizations.

Most admired trait about your hero? Resiliency and determination

How would you use it to change Birmingham? I believe change for Birmingham begins with determination to ensure all individuals realize benefits. Often times, we want the same things, but we reach barriers because we have no resiliency in being creative, communicating and finding solutions.

Your favorite hero’s quote? “I refused to take no for an answer.”

Your real-life hero?My husband, Dontá. Dedicated to his company, community and family but makes time for the boy who has no role model or the family who couldn’t afford Christmas. He is my hero for the things that he quietly does and would rather no one knew about.

Ultimate career goal? My career goal is to continue growing my business and as a result be able to leave a legacy for my children and my community.

Your career track? I began my career as a banker, transitioned to commercial banking and then led a commercial division. I left my banking career in 2007, as a senior vice president, to work full time for Wilson Capital Management.

Most notable career achievement? Becoming a successful entrepreneur and growing our organization despite the challenges our economy has faced.

Why did you choose your profession? I enjoy helping organizations become and remain successful. In my profession, I am able to identify and create products and services that help organizations cultivate employees, manage change and create organizational solutions.

How do you stay competitive? By understanding our clients and their needs. Often times we are forecasting and identifying future needs before our clients are faced with them so that they are prepared to deal with them proactively.

If you could be an animal, which one would you be? An eagle, so I can continue to soar.

What’s a hot topic in your industry? Globalization and international integration and the effects it has on business and corporate culture.

Your guiding principle? Excellence and integrity – my reputation depends on it.

Favorite tech toy? iPhone

No. 1 on your bucket list? To go to heaven and own a yacht named Queen B but I want the yacht before I get to heaven.

Best advice you’ve gotten? Surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable and meaningful work is that which outlives you; create a legacy and make such an impact that once you have passed on people are still blessed by the foundation you have laid.

Your quirkiest habit? I crack my knuckles and I am a bit OCD about a clean house (ask my children and my husband).

Most influential person in your life? My uncle John, personally, has taught me great work ethic, commitment to family and how to be fiscally responsible. Janet Smith, of IVY consulting, professionally, has taught me, don’t talk about it, Do it.

Guilty pleasure? Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and, when time allows, television

Interesting fact about you others may not know? After playing basketball on my high school team and becoming a college cheerleader, the sport I enjoy most today is playing golf.
